Balanced Wellness During Menopause

Balanced Wellness through Menopause

Hot flashes and night sweats, that’s all there is to menopause, right?

Not necessarily.

Menopause symptoms can also include weight gain, dry and itchy skin, bitchiness, insomnia and sleep disturbances, brain fog, forgetfulness, lack of focus, loss of libido, vaginal dryness, irregular periods, hair loss, dizziness, headaches, increase in allergies, changes in fingernails and body order, irregular heartbeat, depression and anxiety, crashing fatigue, and emotional instability.

Menopause is just for older women, right?

Not necessarily.

The average age a woman goes through menopause is 51, however, it can be much younger, especially if the ovaries are removed or damaged due to disease or medication.

Women have been going through this since the beginning of time. It’s pretty standard and simple, right?

Again, not always.

Depending on the time frame and intensity, symptoms can leave you feeling out of balance, misunderstood, frustrated, anxious, and depressed.

There’s nothing you can do, right?

Women just have to suffer through these years?

It’s part of getting old.

Isn’t that true?

The good news is that women have more control over their situation in menopause than they think. There is a practical path back to balanced wellness.

So, you’re moving along though life, relatively comfortable. Sure, not everything is perfect, but everything is familiar. Life is good. You are content.

Then, either gradually or suddenly (as was my case), the hot flashes and night sweats begin. You gain weight. You can’t sleep. You experience brain fog. You are on an emotional rollercoaster that makes PMS look like a kiddy ride at the carnival. Your lose your temper or cry at the drop of a hat. You’ve lost all interest in your job, your mate, sex, the kids, and pretty much everything in life.

You reach out to Dr. Google and there is talk about HRT but with that comes the scare of more harm. You join an online forum or Facebook group and all you see are complaints without solutions. You ask your doctor for help with your weight and he tells you it is simply part of aging.

Suddenly, you find yourself suffering through menopause in silence.

You feel alone, confused, afraid, overwhelmed, and frustrated.

Many women get stuck here for years or even decades. Struggling to find their balance. Wondering if they will ever feel good in their body again.

I know. I’ve been there.

Several years ago, I went into surgery hoping for the best-case scenario: the removal of an ovary and cyst. I awoke to the worst-case scenario: a full hysterectomy and sudden surgical menopause.

I found myself feeling lost and misunderstood as I navigated my journey through surgical menopause. Everything, from getting up in the morning to getting myself through my workday and finding the energy to socialize and maintain relationships, became laborious.

I felt alone because I didn’t know anybody who had gone through exactly what I was. I felt misunderstood because even when I tried to explain what I was going through, people still didn’t understand.

And even though I was a healthy lifestyle coach, I still found myself gaining weight month after month for over two years.

This was a time of crying, screaming, and yelling.

I was in mourning.

But there also came a time to rise.

A time to come back strong.

I combined everything I knew from traditional and nontraditional healing practices. I explored new paths and lifestyle changes to reduce stress and improve my life’s balance and overall wellness.

I worked to bring more peace and calmness to my life through meditation. I defined my definite major purpose. I uncovered passions and spent more time focusing on the positive.

As I focused on happiness, balance and joy showed up.

And there was hope.

However long you’ve been struggling with menopause, you can decide today to take action and go to work toward balanced wellness.

Most women agree that whatever symptoms they are having, they just want to feel good again, physically and emotionally.

  • If you knew how to change your emotions to be more positive, that would make a difference, right?
  • Knowing what foods reduce or exacerbate your symptoms would be helpful, right?
  • If you could fall asleep without drugs, would that make a difference to you?
  • If you could get through your day and not have to rely on endless cups of caffeine or sugar for energy, would that make a difference?
  • Having tools to help you manage your weight would help, right?

The bottom line is that as long as there are symptoms and doctors to complain to, there will always be a pharmaceutical that claims to relieve that symptom. However you take a pill for one symptom, and that pill often causes other symptoms.

So you never know where that’s going to lead you, right?

Well, you know the answer to that. More symptoms, more pills.

Ladies, believe me, I’ve been there.

The good news is, you don’t have to suffer. I’m excited to help you find balanced wellness through menopause. You can enjoy your life and experience more self-love, laughter, and freedom in your body and your emotions.

I’ll share with you simple tools to change your thoughts, words, and feelings.

I’ll explain what lifestyle changes you can make to feel better in your body and help you to either maintain or lose weight during menopause.

I’ll show you ways to take your focus off your symptoms and feeling bad.

Many of these tools and changes don’t cost you a lot of money, but they will require time, consistency, and a commitment to change. If you are ready to commit to feeling better, then…

I bought this book, not to help me with symptoms of surgical menopause, but because Lori is my friend and I wanted to support her. I had a “complete hysterectomy” 16 years ago at the age of 45. I thought I knew what I had signed up for and I was ready. But, as I read Lori’s book, it brought back memories of how I felt afterwards both physically and mentally. I thought that the way I felt was just what I had to go through and I had no choice in how I reacted to the way I felt. I now wish I had had this book back then. Lori walks you through how to overcome many of the problems you will face if you are contemplating surgical menopause or if you have started down the natural menopause path. Her “guide” will help you each step of the way. I think I overcame most of my issues but it has taken almost the full 16 years and there are still some things that rear their ugly head occasionally that I need to deal with. I highly recommend this book.

Don’t waste 16 years figuring things out for yourself. This is definitely worth reading!!

We finally have a book that tells the truth: surgery is difficult and the changes to your body can be intense. Lori’s story is filled with helpful tips as she teaches us what doctors forget to mention: the road back to health may be long, but you can “Come Back Strong.” I appreciate the insights, medical advice and research in this book.

– Holly Winter, Lake Katrine, NY

With intelligence and penetrating insight, Lori Ann King has given women who are facing, or have already had a hysterectomy and/or oophorectomy, the gift of a much-needed guide to help with the fear and confusion that often accompany this experience. She accomplishes this with candor and humor, freely sharing her own personal experiences and feelings on numerous topics that are common to having these procedures, including many that women are hesitant to discuss with their friends or even their doctors. Lori’s experience as a health and fitness coach really helps here. The reader will find numerous resources for finding her way back to wholeness.

Lori introduces readers to important new ways of thinking about the experience of hysterectomy and surgical menopause. She deeply explores the plethora of feelings associated with this, from beliefs a woman has held before discovering that she has a problem, and the shock of first learning about what is happening, all the way through the post-surgical phase and recovery Lori provides powerful tools, along with numerous suggestions for further learning, that will help readers to heal more quickly, and indeed, improve their lives in many positive ways.

Lori has a keen understanding of the mind-body component involved in the healing journey. With a clear and engaging style, she includes fascinating new research findings on this emerging science. Her many tips and ideas for how to deeply connect with this aspect of one’s being will inspire readers to explore facets of themselves that can kindle healing and transformation. For the reader who is willing to be “captain of her own ship,” the implications here are nothing less than profound. Arrival at a state as challenging as surgical menopause can be, can also be understood as an urgent call to dig deeply into one’s being—to learn to trust one’s own instincts. In this way, one can experience life-changing breakthroughs. For example, when Lori wasn’t happy with her medication, and had reached a state of exasperation, she found an alternate route to complaining to her doctor. By applying the techniques she out-lines in her book, her condition greatly improved, and subsequently she was able to find balance with a lower dose of bioidentical hormones.

This is only one of many triumphs that are detailed in these pages. Lori came back strong, and so can you!

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Lori King at an airport. She and I hit it off immediately and I found her to be an inspiring and insightful woman. Little did I know how great of an impact our meeting would have on me.

I read Lori’s book and found it to be so helpful. We all face struggles and although Lori’s struggle was based around a medical situation, I found her methods to cope were universal in application. I have read her book several times and especially liked chapter 6!
